5 Tips for Healthy Hair in the Winter

December 25, 2020 · by Hannah Graley

  1. Run a humidifier and/or diffuser.

It makes sense, really. During the winter months the air is dry. Most of us run heat or have a fireplace going to keep our homes warm. These heating elements dry out the air and can also dry out your hair. A humidifier can restore some of the moisture in the air.

2. Condition hair after every wash.

Washing hair less frequently will be your friend — washes can’t be avoided though. Condition your hair after every wash, focusing on the ends. Leave the conditioner to sit on your hair for at least 5 minutes.

3. Lower the water temperature when you shower.

This goes for any time of the year, as hot water is very rough on our hair. Hot water can take moisture from your hair faster than you can say so, making it brittle and more vulnerable to breaking. Wash your hair with lukewarm water and follow with a cool-water rinse instead. If this is difficult for you, as none of us enjoy an icy shower, try washing your hair in the sink instead.

    4. Avoid Heat.

This tip is helpful for anytime of the year in order to obtain and maintain healthy hair, but it is especially important to avoid heat on your hair when it’s already dry. Blow-drying will dry out your hair, even on a cool setting, although a cool setting is safer. Allowing your hair to air dry is best.

Along these same lines, be careful not to wear your hair wet outside during the winter months as wet hair is more vulnerable to breakage and damage. If you know you will be running short on time in the morning, wash your hair the night before and allow it to air dry.

    5. Use an oil treatment / deep condition hair.

Argan oil is great for your hair. You can find a good organic Argan oil here. I like to use this on my hair before a wash, or use a very small amount as a leave-in oil after a hair wash.

Deep conditioning once a week is also a great way to add moisture to your hair. A simple and effective deep conditioning method can be found here. Leave on for a minimum of 30 minutes or even overnight to add moisture.

For overnight deep conditioning, use an old pillowcase and sleep with a gentle hair towel on to keep from making a mess on your pillow. Oil treatments and deep conditioning can also help with static. *Praise break*

May these hair tips and tricks help you achieve healthier hair in 2021. I hope you all have a wonderful, blessed, and safe New Year!

    Until next time,

    Hugs and blessings
