7 Must-Read Titles
June 26, 2019 · by Jennifer Smith
As a homeschooling mom, summertime means just a tad more white space and breathing room in my life — and I’ve been trying to take advantage of that every chance I get!
One thing I’ve tried to do this summer is read more. I LOVE reading, but often it’s a struggle to fit in the middle of daily housework, church obligations, and a busy schedule — especially during the school year.
I like to read fiction and nonfiction on a variety of topics, but below are seven books that I wholeheartedly recommend for personal growth. (Click on the titles to purchase and for more info.)
The Wrong Jesus by Greg Monette
Such a great book with concise, easy-to-grasp answers to questions new believers or atheists may have about Jesus and how we can know (outside of faith) that He actually lived and that the Bible is true. An interesting, informative book that all Christians, new and mature, will benefit from reading.
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
A classic for engaged and married couples! This was actually my second time to read this book. This summer my husband and I celebrate 12 years as a married couple, and the first time I read this book, we’d been married about two. The book meant so much more this second time around with a more mature love binding our marriage.
What a Difference a Mom Makes by Dr. Kevin Leman
The subtitle is “The Indelible Imprint a Mom Leaves on Her Son’s Life.” As a boy mom, I love to read a good book specifically geared toward moms with boys. This book inspired me to do all I can to help my boys become great men.
Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend
I’ve heard so much about this book, and I’ve been wanting to read it for a long time. To be honest, it was one I had to read more slowly than I usually read. It wasn’t the most captivating thing I’ve ever read. But it’s made a huge difference in how I respond when commitments and prospects are presented to me. Where I used to feel guilty and selfish to say no, I feel I’m now making strides toward wiser, more thought-out choices.
Breaking Intimidation by John Bevere
This book totally changed my life. I COMPLETELY recommend.
While I first thought it might be a repeat of Boundaries (the subtitle says “Say ‘No’ Without Feeling Guilty. Be Secure Without the Approval of Man”), it’s actually not about boundaries or knowing how to say no at all. This book asks the question: When it comes time to stand up for what’s right, will you honor God or honor man?
If you don’t read anything else on this list, read Breaking Intimidation!
WHY? . . . Ten Questions That Deserve Honest Answers by J.R. Ensey
I received this wonderful book in a package from my secret sister at church. Such a good, good read. Every Apostolic lady will be encouraged and informed to read Bro. Ensey’s insights on subjects such as I Corinthians 11, dressing modestly and femininely, the importance of Holy Spirit baptism, and more. I definitely will be returning to this book as a reference material throughout the years.
For Women Who Are Called By Women Who Have Answered by Kim Haney
It has literally changed my life. It’s definitely for those who desperately want to please Jesus more than ever before — ladies who want to sell out to Him completely. I can’t say enough good about the Spirit-inspired content of this book. I’m so thankful that a friend recommended it to me and that I decided to pick up my own copy.
