Fall is well and truly underway, which means it’s time to bring out all the pumpkins, leaf garlands, and cozy candles! I always love decorating for fall (almost as much as decorating for Christmas!), and all of the warmth and coziness it adds to the mood of a house.

Vintage furniture pieces are a great way to lend warmth and character to a more modern home.
Heirloom pieces help bring the story of your family to life inside your home. This secretary desk has belonged to my grandmother for decades, and is a treasured piece my mom uses in her entryway.
Something to keep in mind when collecting decor pieces is how you might use them in unexpected ways. For example: here you see a thrifted silver mail holder that my mom has used to display vintage books. I’m not sure if I would have thought of that right away myself, but it’s such a clever idea!
I love the battery operated lamps that have become so popular lately, especially this brass one my mom found on Amazon. Adding a small lamp to your coffee table, bookshelf, or kitchen counter = instant cozy vibes!
Earlier I mentioned using items in unexpected ways, and here’s another great example: you can turn a tiny teapot or other unique container (I have a little glass Scotty dog I use for this!) to hold matches. You can also order striker strips online and add one to the bottom of your container to use for lighting your matches.
Both my mom and I are pretty in love with the blue and white decor that is so “in” right now. It naturally lends itself toward spring and summer vibes, BUT the blue and white look still works for fall, too, pairing beautifully with autumn oranges and yellows.
If you are shopping on a budget or want to create an eclectic, gathered look for your home, thrifting is the way to go! I got the silver vase you see here at a resale shop for only $1! The turkey dishes were also thrifted (and gifted to me) by my Momma, as well as the wicker napkin rings.
You also shouldn’t underestimate the “dollar store”! Both Dollar Tree and Dollar General often have really cute low-budget home decor. I’ve personally bought several things from my nearby Dollar General, including, most recently, the orange and white gingham placemats you see here. Just $2 apiece! Budget shopping for the win!
And talk about scoring big on a budget… This 1930’s British-made hutch is my favorite garage sale find to date! I’m just loving decorating it for each season this year.
For fall, I kept the decor fairly subtle here, switching out the greenery in my milk glass vase for something more “fall-ish”, trading out my blue and white dishes for my Franciscan Apple serving pieces and these Royal Stafford turkey dishes, and of course, adding a few pumpkins.
More simple but cozy touches of fall! This white-washed wooden cloche was given to me by my mom, and it’s a great staple piece that can be changed up for each season. I already had the two vintage books in there during the summer, but switched out this light blue vase with yellow leaves for the vase and greenery I had in there previously, and added a pumpkin.
I’ve been waiting to use these candlesticks I found in Round Top, TX ever since I bought them in the spring, and “cozy season” seemed the perfect time to bring them out. Of course, I don’t really want to burn actual candles up there, so I got these battery operated, remote controlled taper candles on Amazon!
You don’t have to redecorate every room in your house or have a ton of decor for it to be beautiful. Small touches can still make a big impact and lend seasonal coziness to your home.
And if you can’t or don’t want to spend a lot of money on new decor each season, that is perfectly fine! I am a firm believer in making the most of what you have, as well as the fact that you can do a lot with even a tiny budget if you bargain shop. My collection of fall decor isn’t very big – just one regular size tote’s worth – and nearly everything I have is a “hand me down” from my mom, with a few low budget purchases from thrift stores, the Target “dollar spot”, or Dollar General. Instead, I focus on being creative with what I do have and using it in different ways each year. And you can do the same! Rather than worrying about buying a lot of new things, take a look at what you already own and try to see it with fresh eyes. What can you do with it that you maybe haven’t tried before? So much of decorating is trial and error, playing around with one thing after another until you hit upon the right look. Just have fun experimenting, and at the end of the day, as long as YOU love it, that’s all that matters!
