As a mom to three little girls, the Christmas season is my very favorite. Little children have a way of making everything a little more whimsical and magical … and perhaps a little more chaotic at times. The beautiful thing about children is that it doesn’t take a lot to make them feel special and create lasting memories, just some intention!
If you’re looking for some easy-to-implement ways to make this holiday season a little more special for your family, read on for some ideas!
SET UP A PLAY NATIVITY
When my oldest was born, we purchased one of those Fisher Price nativity playsets. It has become a staple in our home at Christmastime! We set it up on the coffee table in front of the tree in our living room. I love to use it to teach our girls the story of Jesus’ birth, and they love to act it out with the characters. Sometimes Barbies like to join the story as well! Whether it be a toy nativity set or a wooden one from Target, having it front and center before the tree helps keep my children’s focus on what we’re really celebrating this season!
CHRISTMAS SPRINKLES
This family Christmas season idea definitely falls in the “easy” category. We buy some Christmas-themed sprinkles (Walmart currently has the cutest selection!) and use them often in our meals. The sprinkles go on yogurt, along the cut edges of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, on buttered toast, atop hot chocolate, and even on oatmeal. It’s a super simple, super inexpensive little treat that makes everyday foods a bit more fun and festive. It has also been a sneaky way to getting my picky eater to try some new foods!
GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Does your community have some holiday events they organize? Some libraries have special book readings or craft nights, and some local organizations plan events where you can involve your family in serving your community. A bonus is that you can meet new people in your area and create connections while making memories.
CREATIVITY NIGHT
Spend an evening creating with your family. Cut out paper snowflakes, learn a new craft, or check out Hobby Lobby for all kinds of DIY craft kits for ornaments and Christmas decorations. Put on some Christmas music, make some hot chocolate, and use some of that God given creativity! Don’t forget to date each creation - it will be a treasure to unpack each year!
LEAVE A NOTE IN THE STOCKINGS
After all the gifts have been opened and Christmas comes to a close, leave a little note in each stocking before packing them up. Your family could write a special memory from the year or they could write a prayer for the next year on a piece of paper before slipping it into their stocking. When you get your stockings out next season, you’ll have something lovely to reminisce on from the past Christmas.
These are just a few ideas to create some festive family memories this season. Hopefully this list sparks some ideas that would work for your family! May your days be merry and bright and filled with the love of Jesus!
