DIY Giant Paper Snowflakes

December 10, 2025 ยท by Anyssa Hessler

I am not one to decorate my home for every season but when Christmas time comes around, I can't help but want to add a little holiday cheer to our home. Especially when I see how happy it makes my children! These paper snowflakes are something I look forward to making every year. They're so simple to make and the end result is stunning. They are oversized, whimsical and add fun focal points throughout your home. And did I mention they're budget friendly? This craft won't break the bank!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Paper bags - you can use white or brown bags but try to be sure there aren't markings/text on them! You will need 7-8 bags per snowflake. Here are the brown bags I've bought for the last few years, you get 100 bags for about $10.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Heavy duty scissors
  • Something to hang them - I use transparent thread and command hooks

How to make your snowflakes:

Step 1: Zig zag a line of hot glue onto one full side of each bag and place another bag on top and press to secure. Repeat until you have 7-8 bags stacked.

Step 2: Use a pencil or pen (something that can be erased or that isn't noticeable like a marker is) to draw your snowflake pattern. The bag openings should be the tip of your snowflake, and the base of the bag will be the center of your snowflakes. I do not recommend drawing on that bottom rectangle area of the bag, it is difficult to cut through. Have fun with this step and make every snowflake different!

Step 3: Cut out your snowflake pattern.

Step 4: Carefully open your snowflake and glue the two ends together. I also sometimes add a paper clip to secure the two ends together. I have not tried it myself but if you wanted to make these easy to store for future use, you could skip the glue in this step and secure the two ends together with a few small paper clips. You could then remove the paper clips and easily fold the snowflakes.

Now you're ready to hang your beautiful creations! To hang these in my windows, I use transparent thread to create a hook that can hang from a command hook. And to secure above my fireplace, I cut a small hole in the center of the back of the snowflakes so that the command hooks can hold it.

This craft is so easy and affordable! I look forward to it every Christmas and I love leaving my snowflakes up past the holidays. If you try this DIY, tag us on social media - we'd love to see your creations!
