Have you ever been to your grandma’s house and noticed that she has almost every table covered with white or cream laced ornamental fabrics? How she lavishes every piece of furniture to give it a simple touch of elegance? These delicate pieces of fabric are doilies! Not only are they useful as decorative table cloths and costars for teas, deserts, and coffee — but you can also apply them towards your wardrobe. This effortless project is perfect for embellishing unique details onto a simple piece of clothing! I have used doilies when I sew upcycled clothing and loved the results. Now, just so you’re not worried, you don’t have to be an expert at sewing, nor is this simple DIY project time consuming.
This trendy project I came across on ShopRuche will take only 10-15 minutes of your time. If you have a plain shirt or sweater handy, it will be perfect for this DIY project. As for the beginners at sewing, this should be a simple task that can be either hand-stitched or done by a sewing machine. It’s an easy 5 step process: 1.) find two matching doilies, 2.) evenly cut doily in half, 3.) place and pin around the neckline of your shirt, 4.) sew around the neckline, 5.) and finally, iron!
When I have done this to my own items in my wardrobe, I have gotten so many compliments! It gives an outfit a touch of elegance and your own personal flair. You can not only do this with your shirts, but with jackets, sweaters, dresses, cardigans, hats and many other pieces of clothing, as well. There are many ways you can “doll it up” with doilies! Doilies are inexpensive and you can find them at almost any thrift store.
Here are some photos of my own design of the peter pan collar made from doilies:
I attached a ribbon to doll-up the look. Also, you can attach a broach, cameo, button, etc. Furthermore, I added a touch of lace below to give it a layered look. Be creative and let your personality shine through your style!

Here are some more examples of what you can do with doilies. After seeing these, I can’t wait to try the pockets and elbow patches! Adding them to your cardigan or sweater gives them its own sense of uniqueness. Furthermore, they come in many different colors, shapes, and sizes, so you will not be limited to just one size or color.
Happy Sewing, Ladies!
