Essential Oil DIY Dry Shampoo

March 04, 2026 ยท by Andrea Long

If you are a lover of dry shampoo but despise the toxic ingredients in most dry shampoos, this post is for you!

During a particularly busy season recently, I was calculating when I could possibly get in a hair wash day (long hair girlies, raise your hand if you do this!). To my dismay, there was just no time! I frantically searched for a solution. I refuse to use traditional dry shampoos due to their toxic ingredients, and "healthy" ones tend to be messy powders that just cake my hair and leave me with a worse mess than when I began. Then I happened across this recipe from sherisilver.com. Game changer! It's quick and easy to prepare, budget-friendly (I already had most of the ingredients), and so easy to use!

To use, I simply spray the roots with a couple of spritzes, allow to air dry (only takes a minute or two), then style as usual. Works like a charm, smells amazing, AND encourages hair growth all at the same time!

Here's how to make this amazing dry shampoo:

Ingredients:

  • 1/8 cup distilled water
  • 1/2 TBSP witch hazel
  • 1/2 TBSP arrowroot powder
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops cedarwood essential oil

Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl. Fill a small glass spritz bottle (I used a 2 oz one from Amazon) with the dry shampoo. Shake the bottle to mix the dry shampoo (the arrowroot will settle) and spray on the roots. Allow to dry and style as usual. Enjoy!
