Keep Your Heart Devotion

October 20, 2025 · by Jacy Lee Pulford

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23

Recently, I had my very first surgery. It was only for a 2-centimeter repair. I’m very thankful it was minor, but I started to think about all that it took to setup for something so small.

Let’s take a moment to go through what had to be done before the surgery. For 2 centimeters, the width of a paperclip, it was still a big problem. We couldn’t ignore it. So, I needed a surgeon referral, a first appointment with the surgeon, and a pre-op appointment with my doctor.

That was for the appointments with the physicians to go over the details about the day of. At home, I had to do some preparations as well. Before surgery day, I did chores around the house so it would be clean and tidy afterwards. Ordered groceries, meal prepped and packed the pantry. I made childcare arrangements, and my husband took time off of work to be there for me.

On surgery day, I had to make sure I followed the protocols before arriving early in the morning. When we arrived, the staff were already working and preparing the equipment and the room. They had been on the clock for hours already. When it was time, the staff prepped me for the operating room before the surgeon said good morning, and I was wheeled into the room.

How much time and energy does everything add up to for just 2 centimeters?

It doesn’t take much to stop our bodies from functioning the way that they should.

Imagine how our spiritual health is affected as well?

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to keep or guard our hearts because the situations of life flows from it. If this is true, that means we must be diligent in protecting our hearts from even the smallest issue that can lead us off the right path.

Today, ask the Lord to reveal to you a small issue in your heart so you can be led to repentance. Take time today to seek God in prayer. Be encouraged that the Great Physician doesn’t need the same prep time as an earthly surgeon. Jesus can do the impossible!
