Pleats & Plaid: Pairing Perfection

November 20, 2015

Plaid in many ways is a foundational theme of fall fashion.

Whether the standard red and blue or any other variation, whether upon a blanket-scarf, a dress, or a blazer, whether or not we already seemingly have an infinite amount of plaid pieces, we (or maybe just me) spot a plaid piece in a store, and it compels us with all of its plaid wonder.

Yet, because plaid is so wonderful and such the epitome of fall fashion, it can become difficult to style the pattern in such a way that reflects individuality. If I’m honest with myself, my last 20 pins on Pinterest have probably included at least 10 different variations of plaid.

And so you ask, “Elle, how does one wear plaid in such a way that reflects individuality?” To that I answer, “My dears, individuality of any outfit lies in the pairing.”

For this outfit, I used one of my favorite plaid blazers from Target. I’m a huge proponent for blazers as I think their structure brings an outfit together like no other item, as well as providing an easy dress-up mechanism for a lady on-the-go.

Of course, I paired it with a navy and white striped shirt from Ralph Lauren because I’m slightly obsessed with stripes and so I find an excuse to wear them whenever possible. One could have certainly exchanged the stripes for a neutral and created a glam, simplistic look.

And then…the pleats come in to play with my skirt from Lilly and Finch Boutique. With its lovely caramel color, the skirt goes with nearly every fall ensemble I own, especially with, if you haven’t already caught on, plaid!

Finally, I finished off my look with some of my favorite heeled, combat boots from Steve Madden and a bold pair of red tights from Express, which I reserve for those days that I feel incredibly adventurous.

As I mentioned before, pairings display individuality, so use pleats, plaid, red tights, and stripes if you like, but always remember to be creative, be adventurous, and be yourself.
