Real Life Bible Study Routine Hack

February 11, 2022 · by Heidi Stewart

This is a super simplistic concept and probably one you’ve already seen floating around; so not original, or special, BUT I am a firm believer in sharing good ideas that work! (:

You know how sometimes you’re on the couch or somewhere reading your Bible, and you realize you don’t have a highlighter handy? Or you try to study the Word but it means taking up the entire dining room table and having stacks of materials that you’ll have to put back later?

Here’s an idea that I ran across the other day on Pinterest that really helped make my study and prayer time easier (which, in turn, usually translates to making it more consistent.)

Essentially, you take any basket or container that you like and fill it with the items you need each morning and/or evening during your quiet time and study time.

What You’ll Need

  1. A sturdy basket that can comfortably fit your Bible standing up.
  2. ANYTHING YOU WANT!! Think:
    1. Bible
    2. Commentaries, Devotionals, etc.
    3. Prayer Journal
    4. Favorite Pens
    5. Bible Highlighters
    6. Stickers or Post-Its
    7. Bookmarks
    8. Tissues (you’re going to need them)
    9. Memory Verse Flashcards
    10. Empty Jars or Containers for Pens

Truly, the sky's the limit. If you use any devotional books or if you’re reading books on marriage, parenting, spiritual growth, etc. you can add those to the basket, too! I’ve really been loving the study called “Eat This Book” by Sis. Melanie Shock and a book that breaks down Proverbs by Bro. Daniel Segraves.

If you like to make notes or journal in your Bible, you can also add your supplies in this basket as well; stickers, markers, calligraphy pens, etc.

Here's an example of the basket I made as SOON as I saw the idea. There are tons of others that are prettier if you search "Bible Baskets" on Pinterest.

The great thing about this set-up is that it’s portable and keeps everything neat and tidy. If your daily Bible reading spot can change depending on kids or others in the house, it’s nice to be able to grab your little basket and have everything you need wherever you might end up.

There is something to be said about making your time with God a special thing. I’ve heard one preacher say that he lights a specific candle everytime he goes to pray so that his environment changes from an everyday office to a place of fellowship and peace with God. Did the candle make all the difference? I’d wager not. But it made his prayer time a special place and priority in his home and THAT made all the difference!

So, gather your items, find a cozy spot and get into that precious Word of God!
