Soak in the Sunshine

May 25, 2026 · by LaDonna Harrell

Oh, Sweet May. Such a beautiful time in the South. The birds are singing, the green grass is growing, the beautiful flowers are becoming vibrant, the rivers, creeks and waterfalls are inviting. People are enjoying getting out working in yards, walking in the local parks, hiking in the state parks, or planting vegetable gardens.

There are so many wonderful activities to be involved in during the month of May. Whatever you decide to do, I would love to encourage you to get outside and move your body. It’s time to soak in the sunshine!

Sometimes the most healing thing we can do is step outside, lift our face toward the sunshine, and let God awaken what has felt weary inside us. In a world full of noise and schedules, stepping outside is a gentle reminder that our bodies were designed to move, breathe, and live fully.

Nature often draws us closer to God. The warmth of the sun, the sound of birds singing, and the beauty of creation remind us that we are surrounded by evidence of His care and creativity. Even a quiet walk can become a moment of prayer, gratitude, or reflection. Scripture repeatedly points to creation declaring the glory of God, and spending time outdoors helps slow our hurried hearts enough to notice it. It becomes easier to breathe deeply, let go of stress, and reconnect with peace.

Sunshine and movement help awaken the body naturally. Exposure to sunlight supports vitamin D production, which plays a role in bone health, immune support, and energy levels. Gentle movement like walking, stretching, gardening, or playing outside with your children helps improve circulation, loosen stiff muscles, and increase overall energy. After winter months or long days indoors, the body often craves that natural reset that comes from fresh air and sunshine.

Being outside can also calm anxiety and clear mental fog. Sunlight will help regulate sleep cycles and improve mood, while physical activity releases endorphins that help reduce stress. Your mind becomes less cluttered, creativity begins to return, and emotions will settle. Even a few minutes outdoors can give you a sense of calm that is hard to recreate indoors.

Doesn’t this sound lovely? Not only does it feel nice to be outside, there are spiritual, physical, mental and emotional reasons to get in the great outdoors!

I encourage you to try to find time this week to enjoy time outside and let the sunshine and gentle breeze bathe you in warmth and love.
