Summer Reading Recommendations: Armchair Travel

July 09, 2023 · by Ashton Dorow

Are you a book lover like me and always on the hunt for new authors to love? Or maybe you're just starting to make reading a habit in your life and don't know where to start--and especially, where to find good, wholesome, Christian-based fiction?

Well, the good news is... I've got you, girl! I'm always ready and willing to give recommendations to people in search of a good read, and today, I'm specifically sharing books that feel like they transport you to another time and place. It's like the ultimate summer vacation--except it all takes place in your imagination from the comfort of your own home!

THE SECRETS OF THE ISLES SERIES BY ROSEANNA M. WHITE (Destination: Cornwall, England)

Roseanna is one of my top favorite authors of all time for many reasons. Everything I've ever read by her is fabulous--and she has a ton of books to her name! Her most recently completed series, set in the early 1900's in the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall, is especially fun. The island setting is perfect for summer reading, and you will find yourself laughing, sighing, and hanging on the edge of your seat as you follow Roseanna's sprawling cast of lovable characters on three high-stakes treasure hunting adventures!

THE OUT FROM EGYPT SERIES BY CONNILYN COSSETTE (Destination: Egypt and the Middle East)

You can't get much more removed from our present reality than being transported to the time of Moses! This first series from the amazingly talented Connilyn Cossette is a MUST READ! Book one, Counted with the Starsimagines the ten plagues and resulting Exodus through the eyes of an Egyptian slave girl, while books two and three take you deep into the heart of the Israelites' time at Mount Sinai and the conquest of Jericho forty years later. Viewing these Biblical events from such unique perspectives will seriously blow your mind and make you want to study the actual scriptures even more!

THE ROSE AND THE THISTLE BY LAURA FRANTZ (Destination: Scotland)

Laura Frantz is a master of historical Christian romance. She can weave a tale like no one else, painting such vivid word pictures that you feel you have lived these stories alongside her characters. Her most recent release will transport you to 1700's Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion and introduce you to an English noblewoman who is forced to seek refuge in the gloomy castle of her father's ally, a handsome Scottish laird. The dreamy setting, Scottish accents and vocabulary, the sweet love story--it's all utter perfection!

THE RIVER OF TIME SERIES BY LISA T. BERGREN (Destination: Tuscany, Italy)

This is my FAVORITE book series of all time! I've read countless amazing books that I adore, but no matter how many I read, nothing can top these for me. In this epic, young adult, time-travel series, follow two American girls as they stumble back in time while on summer vacation in Italy and find themselves in the middle of a deadly conflict between two warring medieval factions. If you can suspend your disbelief for a bit and go with the whole time-travel theory, then I can guarantee you will be in for the ride of your life!
