There's Beauty in Spiritual Pruning

March 23, 2026 · by LaDonna Harrell

There is something quite interesting about watching a garden being pruned. At first glance, it can feel harsh. Branches are cut back, excess growth is removed, and what once looked full is suddenly stripped down. To the untrained eye, it may even look like damage. But to the gardener, it is care. It is intentional. It is necessary.

In the same way, God lovingly prunes our lives.

Jesus tells us in John 15:2, “Every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” Notice that He is not cutting away dead things alone. He is also pruning what is already bearing fruit. That can be confusing and even painful. You may find yourself asking, “Lord, why this? Why now?” especially when you were doing well, growing, and thriving.

But pruning is not punishment. It is preparation.

Just like in the natural, pruning removes what would hinder greater growth. It allows more light to reach the plant. It directs energy where it is most needed. Spiritually, God may begin to remove habits, relationships, or even comforts that have quietly taken up space in your heart. Not because He wants to hurt you, but because He sees what you are becoming.

And sometimes, that process hurts.

There is no denying that spiritual pruning can feel like loss. It can feel like stretching, like breaking, like being refined in ways you did not ask for. Yet Scripture reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time.” Not immediately. Not always in the moment. But in His time.

That means what feels painful now is not pointless. It is part of a larger story God is writing in your life.

Isaiah 43:2 offers such comfort in these seasons: “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned.” Notice it does not say if you walk through the fire, but when. The fire is part of the journey, but so is His presence.

And here is the beautiful truth to hold onto. God does not waste pain.

Every tear, every moment of confusion, every season where you feel cut back or hidden is being used. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” All things. Not just the joyful moments, but the hard ones too.

The pruning process refines your faith. It deepens your trust. It draws you closer to the heart of God in ways comfort never could. What feels like a loss is often making room for something far greater.

Think of gold being refined. It must go through fire to remove impurities. What comes out is purer, stronger, and more radiant than before. In the same way, what God is producing in you through this season will be more beautiful than anything you could have created on your own.

So if you find yourself in a season of pruning, take heart. You are not forgotten. You are not being diminished. You are being carefully and lovingly shaped.

Hold onto Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Your season is coming. Growth is happening beneath the surface, even if you cannot yet see it.

Trust in God. He knows exactly what He is doing.
