There is a fine line between what is acceptable to eat for breakfast and what is acceptable to eat for dessert. As a baker and self-proclaimed sugar addict, I find myself blurring this line quite often. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and all I want is my day to start out sweet!
This recipe combines two of my favorite treats: Crisp Apple Pie and Decadent Cinnamon Rolls. The result is absolutely irresistible – you might just be tempted to have one for breakfast and dessert by combining two scrumptious classics rolled up into one delightful treat!
Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls
YEILD: 9
Ingredients
Filling:
3 or 4 granny smith apples chopped
1 stick butter softened
1/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
Rolls:
2 & 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 & 1/4 tsp yeast
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
Glaze:
1 & 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 stick butter melted
3 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
Preheat oven to 200°.
In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat add half of the butter, chopped apples, and regular sugar. Stir until evenly coated and cooked until lightly golden and caramelized. Allow to cool in pan while the rolls are prepared.
In a large bowl combine the flour, yeast, and salt.
In a separate small microwave safe bowl, heat the sugar, butter, water, and milk for 1 minute and 30 seconds until the butter is just melted.
Add the butter mixture to the flour mixture followed by the egg and mix until a coarse dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work area and knead for 4 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rest for 5 minutes.
While the dough is resting prepare the rest of the filling. Whisk together the brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Set aside.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work area into a 16″X9″ rectangle.
Spread the remaining butter for the filling across the dough. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture followed by the cooked apples.
Tightly roll and slice into 9 sections. Place the rolls into a 12″X12″ greased pan.
Cover with foil, turn off the oven, and allow the rolls to rise in the oven for 25 minutes.
Turn up the heat to 375 degrees and bake for an additional 15-18 minutes or until lightly golden.
Remove and allow to cool slightly while preparing the glaze.
Beat together all the ingredients required for the glaze. Spread on top of the warm rolls, serve, and enjoy!
