Galentine's Sprinkle Cake Embroidery

February 11, 2026 ยท by Anyssa Hessler

Happy Valentine's week! I wanted to celebrate with the special ladies in my life, so I hosted a fun Galentine's cake decorating night. I recently discovered "cake embroidery" where you use sprinkles to make a cake look like it's been embroidered. It's a little time-consuming but so fun and the end results are beautiful!

Typically I am a homemade kind of gal but I needed 5 cakes (plus 2 mini cakes for my kids) so I opted for box cake mix. I did however make my own buttercream and this is the recipe I used - it turned out great! A tip I learned that the recipe doesn't share: add 1 single drop of purple food coloring to your buttercream to cancel out the yellow tint and make it white. If you add too much it will start to look gray or purple so be careful, but it worked for me; my cakes were bright white!

Prepare and frost your cakes ahead of time. Place them on cake boards so everyone can easily move the cakes around when decorating. To make the party smooth and organized, here is everything I used:

  • throw away tablecloth - to catch all the sprinkles and for easy clean up
  • cake boards - the boxes I ordered came with these, here are the boxes I ordered (FYI they were a lot taller than we ended up needing but the price was great)
  • cake boxes - so everyone can transport their masterpieces safely
  • toothpicks - to make an indent for the sprinkles, some of my sprinkles rolled off because I skipped this step!
  • decorating tweezers - it's hard to hold onto those tiny sprinkles! These were great!
  • paint palette trays - I thought these were helpful so we didn't have to keep passing sprinkle containers around.
  • heart shaped cake molds - your cakes can be any shape but I thought these were so fun! The silicone made the baking process so easy as well.
  • sprinkles - I have a ridiculous sprinkle collection so I had more than enough for everyone but you could easily ask everyone to contribute sprinkles from their collection! I found this pack at my local Kroger for only $10 and it had a great variety.

My family had so much fun decorating, and we all got to take a sweet treat home to share. I hope you try cake embroidery for an upcoming occasion!
